I have a solo ranger, wat i do is spike/flame/dust trap and stay on the traps while pulling 2-3 monsters (only meele monsters, no mesmers or necromancer based stuff)
they become blinded and i continuously use barrage, after the blindness wears off, use throw dust, then whirling defence, ull avoid most of their dmg and theyll be dead b4 ur defenses wear off.

My ranger solos the hydras at Ember Light Camp - choking gas to shut down the spells, a barbed trap or three to keep them a few steps behind me and some poison to keep them degenerating. Poison them to start with, spreading choking gas over them all to shut down the opening spells, leading them over your barbed traps. Now that they have 7 degen you can switch to your knidle arrows and begin dropping them, use whirling defense if they close, plant another barbed trap and back off. Distracting shot is a nice extra if you see one casting again. Distracting shot can be swapped out for Troll's Unguent for extra safety, and Whirling defense can be swapped for Dryder's Defense if you want extra protection vs the elemental damage, but you should shut down most of the opening barrage anyway, and whirling defense lasts longer. I did this accidentally the first time, having gone out with a SoC and forgetting the henchies, deicded to try it, and it was pretty thrilling to realise that you can handle a group of 2-3 hydras solo.
Poison Arrow
Tiger's Fury
Distracting Shot (or Troll's Unguent)
Whirling Defense (or Dryder's Defense)
Kindle Arrows
Choking Gas
Barbed Trap
Winter (I wear furs to help cope with damage and the cold makes the knidle do much better)

yea most of the time a solo ranger isnt one that dishes out dps like a smiter or ele would, its the one that has to be crafty and smart about his enemy
tho i never tried it myself cuz i could never do it =P

i was thinking (in church, cause i was that bored) of a way to solo aataxes, and ive never been in the uw so im probably way off on this one.
you go in with spike, barbed, flame, and dust traps, energizing wind, serpents quickness, throw dirt, and troll unguent. and i would be carrying a staff with energy +10 - 15 and have 15 expertise, 16 wilderness, and use the rest of your points in beast.
when you first see like an aatax or two, stand a little before you aggro them, cast energizing wind, and drop all four traps. then, use serpents quickness, wait the 20 seconds for barbed, flame, and spike and cast them again right on top. wait another 20 seconds for them all to recharge, regen all your energy, and drop all 4 again. you should still be well under the 90 seconds that it takes for the traps to go off. wait for a little energy, and then aggro the aataxes and lure them over the traps. while their knocked down, run back, and wait till your traps recharge again. they should be on you, but not doing any damage cause their blinded. use throw dirt, and your traps should be recharged so drop them all again. repeat this as much as possible.
i dunno how much hp these things have, but i would guess that theyd be dead or near dead by now.
i dunno if this would work, but if anyone has tried sumthing like this before, tell me if it worked or not

BTW, serpents quickness needs to be in use before you use other skills if you want it to speed up their recharge.

Rangers own the UW for the most part now that solo monks are for the most part gone. But they have tons of health and they don't take that much dmg from your traps. For me i ususally go with trap groups of 3-5. If 1 manages to get through we are pretty much screwed though. Unless we can run very very very far away. QZ is a better choice here. much much faster

lol with a trap group of 5, if you each lay down 8 traps before you aggro, thats 40 traps and roughly 2,000 damage. i reaaaaly hope that aataxes arent that strong lol

Rangers can easily solo griffons/minotaurs/hydras etc with pets. I don't know if there are any beastmaster solo builds on this forum, if anyone is interested I can post a build I'm using for a while and it works great.
I avoid using traps to solo, tried that but it's just too risky; you do have a high chance to avoid attacks, but there is a 10% chance you will get hit .
Pets rule.

I had an ok farming build once:
Pin Down
Penetrating Shot
Hunters Shot
Flame Trap
Spike Trap
Barbed Trap
Apply Poison
Storm Chaser (Just incase)
They normally never get to you if you do it right.
BTW, you could make a Mo/R and get a pet and the put Bath's Aura on it and spam spells for Zealots...

Yeah, the damage can be a problem beacuse you (i mean the pet) can attack only one target so it can take some time. I usually take groups of 3 minoutaurs/griffons and max 2 hydras. I have bm on 15 and exp on 14 so comfort animal heals the pet 104 for only 4 energy. Plus, i use call of protection and otyugh's cry so healing isn't a problem at all.

Maybe R/Me with greater conflaguration, mantra of flame, and drakescale armor would be good for solo'ing.

Most enemies retreat when you use a speed buff or when they are crippled and you are running.
Just bleed/poison them and run away for a moment. Let the poison do it's work and re-apply as needed.
